Where Is The Best Office In The World?

Here of course….. sailing along the NSW coast in Australia, on our way to our next adventure.

Sailing (and writing) in my slippers along the NSW coast

Sailing in my slippers! And Writing – this was the beginning of Of Foreign Build… Note the bikes (bike wheels upside down outside the stanchions), the outboard is under the blue canvas by my head. We were on our way!

Perhaps in a TSR (Travelling Stock Route) on the BNT (Bicentennial National Trail) with 5 horses and a tent…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Somewhere nearby there are five very happy horses, gallavanting, galloping, and rolling in the creek! Meanwhile, notes on the horse trekking book A Standard Journey started here….

What about on a 1920s Dutch barge in France? Not bad, but we were (and still are) renovating – it’s a noisy, dusty, and messy place to live and work.

Magdalena Bay, Mexico – the cafe was closed but wifi was on!

In beautiful locations the work doesn't stop!

We’d recently purchased Pyewacket in San Francisco and were on our way to La Paz… but plans changed rapidly. We spent two years sailing back to Australia via Pitcairn and Easter Island, etc…. a tough journey – detail of which in my next book This Is It, out January 2016.

On a barrel in the boat yard in Panama?

The dinghy dock payment each day was good fun too!

Well at least I got to stay relatively clean!

Puttering along the Intracoastal Waterway of America. Near South Carolina on our 10 metre sailing boat Mariah II.

I make time to write anywhere/anytime!

Flat water sailing – yippee!

I’m a travel writer – literally. If you want to travel and work you can – you just have to make it happen.

Where’s your favourite office? Where’s the most exotic, fun, extreme place you’ve worked?

Whirlwind UK Book Tour A Success! And Cake.

Two radio interviews, two events, and numerous roast dinners!

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of family and friends catch-up and events for my recent release A Standard Journey – 5 horses, 2 people, and 1 tent.

The story is about how we adopted five Standardbred horses, trained them (and they us). The seven of us then set out into the Australian bush for several months; all our belongings carried by horse.

I donate 50%+ profits to horse/animal charities and this led to me a guest appearance at the Redwings Sanctuary at Oxhill and their stand at The Horse Of The Year Show.

SAMSUNG

At Redwings Oxhill, just before the reading/signing. I tried not to reveal the outcome of a dramatic event in the book, but the audience were desperate to know!

SAMSUNG

Redwings do a wonderful job – their team at Oxhill are extraordinary in their passion and care.

I had a wonderful time at the Horse Of The Year Show connecting with readers and helping Redwings raise money via their merchandise (including A Standard Journey), to help rescue more horses.

Redwings Stand and their wonderful team. My books are near the front.

Redwings Stand and their wonderful team. My books are near the front.

SAMSUNG

They did a lovely job with my table and I added the bookmarks and koalas which went down a treat!

Radio!

Between the mayhem of driving around the country I was invited onto two radio shows (one with Noel).

Firstly, with the incredible Carol Graham. Carol is an author, radio talk show host, health coach, motivational speaker, blogger, businesses woman, mum and grandmum!

Carol is a wonderful interviewer and here you can hear her easy-listening interviews with extraordinary people. She deftly shares their laughter and inspirational stories, and encourages everyone to never… ever… give up hope.

My interview will be appearing shortly – I’ll put the link here and give another shout out when it’s ready!

The BBC

Lastly, we met Nick Coffer from BBC 3Counties Radio. We had great fun chatting to Nick (who thinks we need therapy!), and left mini koalas hanging all over his studio to make our presence known and remembered. Here’s the link to listen, jump forward to around 37 minutes – the interview runs for about fifteen.

SAMSUNG

Having fun before we went in the studio.

SAMSUNG

With Nick Coffer, having a great time!

SAMSUNG

I could get used to this (note the koalas taking over!)

Roast Dinners

Several yummy roast dinners, care of my lovely mum, kept me going (and tightened the jeans somewhat).

SAMSUNG

… and CAKE, you’ve got to have CAKE!

I learned a great deal from all these events. Switching from social media to ‘getting out there’ has really worked for me, and is so much more fun.

I’ll write a blog soon on what I learned and what I’d do differently next time.

Has anyone else had great success and fun ‘getting out there’?

Popular Sailing Memoir Comes to Audio

I’m rather chuffed to announce that

“Of Foreign Build – From Corporate Girl to Sea-Gypsy Woman”

is now available on Audio.

Here’s the official announcement/Press Release:

New Street Nautical Audio is proud to announce its publication of Jackie Parry’s superb Of Foreign Build: From Corporate Girl to Sea-Gypsy Woman, already a bestseller in digital and paper editions.

After suffering an emotionally-brutal bereavement, Jackie made a bold decision and stepped into a new life. With a new husband, and no prior experience with boats, she entered the obscure but fascinating nether-world of the cruising lifestyle.
pic for audio book

Her world would never be the same again. A floating home with no fridge or hot water, and a dinghy instead of a car.

The first off-shore voyage took Jackie into a ferocious storm, which battered her physically and mentally. But amid those raging seas, Jackie shed the fear she’d been harbouring. Soon she was blissfully voyaging around the world, but she still carried the mixed emotions of losing one man while falling head over heels in love with another.

Not only did Jackie deal successfully with the challenges of her new existence, she also battled with the testosterone fuelled nautical world to become both a professional captain and a qualified maritime teacher.

Most importantly, Jackie found herself.

Narrated by Britain’s Michelle Michaels, the New Street Nautical Audio edition for Of Foreign Build runs 14 hours, 43 minutes, and is available from Audible, iTunes, and Amazon. (Listen to an excerpt here).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Originally from the UK, Jackie Parry is now an adopted Australian. But it’s hard to pin Jackie’s location down at any given time. She’s currently exploring French canals on a Dutch barge with her Australian husband.

Thanks For the Memoir-ees!

We Love Memoirs!

As an author, currently writing my third memoir, I’ve become a fan of all memoirs.

What’s better than delving into another person’s life? At the very least we learn that our fears, hopes, dreams, worries, and lack of sanity are sentiments that are not exclusive – (maybe that last one is exclusive to me!)

Let’s Celebrate
Monday 31st August is We Love Memoirs Day and will be celebrated worldwide.

11891021_10153150315214065_5836732040202273879_n (1)

We Love Memoirs (WLM) Facebook group was set up on 31st August 2013 by two memoir authors, Victoria Twead and Alan Parks, who wanted to create a place where memoir readers and authors could come together and chat.

Who Are They?
Victoria Twead is a New York Times bestselling author of “Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools” and the “Old Fools” series, while Alan Parks is the author of “Seriously Mum, What’s an Alpaca?” and the “Seriously Mum” series.

The Ethos
Victoria and Alan were determined to foster a warm community and have always discouraged authors from pushing their own books at readers.

Overwhelming Success!
The results have been astounding, and WLM has grown quickly. New friendships are formed every day, and WLM meet-ups across the globe have become common. Small wonder that We Love Members is often described as “the friendliest group on Facebook”.

Whether you love writing or reading memoirs (or both), you’ll love this group. Join WLM today and start chatting with memoir authors and readers.

See you there!

Afterlife of Books and Magazines

I don’t usually deface books or magazines, but the other day I did – out of desperation.

I should apologise to Motor Boat Monthly Magazine. But the magazine in question was several years old, ten I think, and it had been read several times, by us both – AND, they went out of print last year (according to Wikipedia).

Instead of throwing out the magazine we became inspired. Most people, who live the nomadic life (especially on boats) learn this knack, everything has at least two uses. We certainly had a use for the stiff folds of paper.

Saving your sanity
So, what can you make with an old Motor Boat Magazine, coloured tape, paper, scissors and string?

You can make something to save your sanity – that’s what!

Freedom at a price
Mooring on the French canals is a wonderful freedom. At many places, most times, you can stop for the night or even a day or two.

Currently, shade is our top priority. Fortunately, we have found great shady spots, safe depths and tied up safely on a straight stretch. (Why oh why do so many boats tie up on a blind bend?)

Slow down
It’s here, tied blissfully to a quiet spot we are hounded by hire boats that insist on racing alongside with total disregard of the ‘rules of the road’ – you must pass all moored vessels at no more than 3 kms/hr.

What happens?
As the water is sucked and pushed alongside a speeding boats’ hull, we shift forwards then backwards and our mooring pegs, that have been driven into the bank, are literally pulled out.

When we see a boat approach and ask them to slow – most do. Some look at us as if we are mad!

So, we made a sign, that’s reinforced with Motor Boats Monthly magazine. It is nowhere near big enough, it’s a little amateurish (hastily cobbled together in desperation and fear of being set adrift!), but it’s a start. I am already planning Mark 2.

What creative ideas have you developed to improve your life on the road?

From Author to Calendar Girl?

A cheeky smirk played on my lips when I read the new message,

“From Wednesday you are our Calendar Girl!”

I’m giggling again now, as I can imagine your eyes scanning down to find the Calendar Girl shot – whether excitedly or in horror!

You must banish all of these visions dear reader, as the reference to me being Calendar Girl, is my photography! But do not despair – read on…. there are ‘exciting’ shots to follow!

Admittedly, I am a few years older now, maybe a little softer in places and definitely sporting more grey hairs – I’ve earned every single one of them!

If you want to know why or how I’ve earned my grey highlights, laughter lines, and a life that is extraordinary, take a look at my sailing and horse-riding memoirs (Amazon link WITH excerpts):

And just for being good sports and reading to the end of my post – here’s another recent picture that had Noel rolling his eyes! Well, a Calendar Girl has to have a beauty regime!

Exposed!

I’ve been uncovered and exposed. I’ve been cajoled, poked, pushed and pulled.

It’s been a roller-coaster couple of days.

Dig deep,” she said, “search your soul….”

For twenty-four hours I was worrying and fretting; how was I going to do this?

Then…. I GOT it!

Opening Up
My heart opened, my words flowed and my goodness it was cathartic. It was a relief, liberating, and on a par with a two-day marathon counselling session.

I laughed, I cried, I did both at once!

Even I understand myself better now.

The Beginning
It started last year (or seventeen years ago, depending how far you delve into my psyche!) In 2013, Noel and I rescued five horses and trekked part of the Bicentennial National Trail.

???????????????????????????????

Jackie’s on Charlie taking the picture, so you can see part of Ned. Noel and his three behind.

The Story
I’ve written the story, and the editors (at Narrative Ink Editing LCC) said, “This was an absolute joy to read! It’s such a unique story. The characters are funny and kind and endearing. This book at times had me laughing out loud, but it is serious too…. Some of your descriptive passages were absolutely breathtaking. At times I felt like I was right there on the trail with them all.”

???????????????????????????????

Noel on Stevie, leading Spirit and Dom (Dom’s trying to roll)

A Whole New Level
Now, together, we’ve taken the story to another level. Fears, accomplishments and my very soul weaves through the book; so not only will you laugh, cry, and be shocked, you will ride the trail with Noel and I, and you will also cling to the emotional roller coaster with me.

Hot Spring Deal – Virtual Travel & Adventure for 99 cents / 99 pence!

I’m rich – that’s what people think.

While I may not be driving a Rolls Royce (yet), I am enjoying best-seller rankings with my recently published book – “Of Foreign Build – From Corporate Girl to Sea-Gypsy Woman”.

Reality
Few authors make ‘good’ money – that’s the reality. For me, my sales graph provides great pleasure as it snakes across the page continually placing “Of Foreign Build” in the top ten rankings (and often at No. 1). Yes, I am quietly satisfied with my achievements. The reviews say it all.

“Resolute” “Stimulating” ”Rousing” “Moving” “Unconventional”

Marketing can be just as hard as writing a book!
If people don’t know that your book exists, they aren’t going to buy it! This has become the little mantra in my head that keeps me going. Marketing costs money and time – lots and lots and lots of time!

FREE!
‘Give your book away for free’ is the advice these days. I am uncomfortable with this for several reasons:
1) How many other industries do people slog away for years and produce a product that people expect you to give them?
2) My work has value!

We experienced the world

I won’t disregard all my options, maybe by my twentieth book I’ll consider a freebie to the masses. I have held (and will hold) many giveaway competitions, but they’ve all been within my control – so far. Keep an eye on my website and sign up here to be the first to know about freebies.

Promotions are important
I do understand that due to the vast choice readers have, it’s important to promote, and I am really excited about this promotion!

Nothing is Impossible!

“Nothing is impossible – the world itself says, ‘I’m possible!'”

Inspiration: The quote above is by the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, and the beauty in life was part of the inspiration for my story: Of Foreign Build – From Corporate Girl to Sea-Gypsy Woman.

Living on a ten metre boat, for nine years, I saw the world and changed from a scared, brokenhearted girl, into a sea-gypsy woman – I figured out who I am. Here’s a brief glimpse into my life…

down wind

Sailing: Traversing oceans is not like a plane or car ride. Nothing is certain except a vast puddle of water and a great stretch of sky. The days pass, measured not in hours but in distance. It’s dynamic, fantastic and petrifying all at the same time. There is rarely pattern or logic; you deal with what’s received, as it arrives . . . moment by moment.

Paradoxical beauty: Pounding waves, great geysers of water, white bubbles chuckling softly amid giant swells. Plunging into the void, pushing away thoughts of what lurks below. The wind from hell. Disgruntled clouds carrying punches.???????????????????????

Reality: Hopping in a warm bunk, trusting my partner with my life enables me to sleep. Malcontent wind and waves provide rude awakenings. The dawn paints the horizon in breathtaking crimson or sadistic black. The crucial burden of stores, lifted with the seas.???????????????????????

A Lesson in Humility: Vivid green phosphorescence streaks behind magnificent dolphins and rainbow reflections of oil. The paradoxical beauty of the ocean.

The result:
“Your book helped me through a recent bereavement.”
“It made me cry, laugh and quake with fear in equal measure.”
“Your insight-fullness and sense of adventure captured me.”
“Beautifully written with honesty, humour and love for all living creatures on this planet.”
“It’s a long while since I’ve so engaged with a book.”
“Once you start this book, you’ll not want to put it down.”
“Moving, rousing, uplifting, stimulating.”
“I loved “Of Foreign Build.” The book is listed as a memoir, a misnomer I believe, as I found it to be much more. It’s really a love story, an adventure story, and a story of personal growth and determination all rolled into a nine year odyssey.”

What inspires you?

Many Indie authors, including me, are looking for the best place to market books. Sadly, there is no ‘one-place’ solution. There is, though, many months of trial and error to find out what works for you best.

You need to take into account:SAMSUNG

  • Your audience
  • Your budget
  • Your time
  • The genre
  • Price

After launching my second book, I went on a marketing frenzy. Although I became a bit burnt out with interviews, pictures, blogs, negotiating, promotions, profiles etc, it was worth it. But I couldn’t maintain that level energy on one thing – after all, I am an author, I need to write!

Now I continue to chip away, here and there, with blogs and promotions to keep the marketing simmering. So I am always pleased to find a new, different and interesting place to promote books and hopefully make some sales.

Opportunity One
Noel and I are in France. We live on a Dutch barge, which we are currently renovating. Noel needed a visa. It was all rather fraught (see details here), however, he needed health insurance from the UK. We found a great company that provides very reasonable quotes and even translated the documentation into French! When I thanked the health insurance company, I told them I was writing a blog about our experience, and mentioning them.

New Promotion/Possible Sales – One
A few days ago, I emailed the blog link to the health insurance company. They shared my website with the entire office, friends and family and told everyone that, for a last minute Christmas present, my book is ideal!

I am often up at all hours, thinking, writing, marketing...

I am often up at all hours, thinking, writing, marketing…

Opportunity Two
A fellow author (ex-army) asked me to contribute a short piece to their Service Military on-line magazine in Cyprus. I could write about ‘anything’ I wanted, (which was harder than I imagined!). I wrote about how I don’t like New Year Resolution lists, but I like looking back at achievements. I talked about how I do like goals and that I remember this phrase to help me out, “If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done!” This little yarn, led nicely into me talking about my next writing project and my current book that has recently been released.

New Promotion/Possible Sales – Two
The equivalent to a full page advertisement in a magazine, going out to thousands of (UK) people in another country, in other words, a whole new market to promote my book to!

Results?
I did notice a few sales just after I received the insurance email! The ‘short-article’ results will be early next year. Every sale counts.
But it’s the long term results that I am after too. The ‘word’ slowly rolling-out as far and as wide as possible…. someone….somewhere…saying…  “Have you read Of Foreign Build – From Corporate Girl To Sea-Gypsy Woman? – it’s a great story.”

And you…?
What neat and unusual ways have you promoted your book?SAMSUNG
