Here’s what’s being said already:
‘To enjoy this thoroughly, all you need to know about horses is that the head’s the front and the tail’s the back.’
‘For me, this is a book about journeys: why we do them; with whom; how they challenge and change us; why they are so difficult to end.’
‘Even the chapter headings are well-written – eg “Bucking and Farting” and “Here’s My Heart.”’
‘It has some very moving moments of unexpected kindness – human and equine – that stayed with me after I’d finished the book.”
“Heartily recommended”
“A story that will resonate with any animal lover, any adventurer, and anyone
who enjoys reading about ordinary people achieving truly extraordinary things.”
Meet the stars!
The paperback book contains colour pictures and links into another world, but here’s the full photo album here: https://jackieparry.com/photo-album/ – meet the real stars of the story.

This is a wonderful read if you like hiking, riding, adventuring, exploring areas unfamiliar. It also makes a great gift for anyone interested in life on the hoof and this is a bargain with many proceeds going to worthwhile charities.

I enjoyed A Standard Journey so much that I sent my Mum, Joan Barrera, a copy. She is 89, doesn’t have an Amazon account, and, due to arthritis in her hand, can’t write or use a computer well. What she can do is read books, a lot of books. I spoke to her last night, our usual Tuesday chat (Mum’s in Florida). Here is her review of A Standard Journey.
me: What did you think of the book?
Mum: It was a very pleasant read…(chuckles)…I loved the horses and the way the author put words in their mouths.
me: What did you like best?
Mum: I really liked it all, but especially the way the book ended… (there was more said, but I don’t want to be a spoiler).
me: What word would you use to describe the book?
Mum: (no hesitation) Delightful!
me: On a scale of 1 to 5, how would you rate A Standard Journey?
Mum: Oh, I think I’d have to give it a five.
This is the actual conversation.

Glen, that is absolutely beautiful – quite THE best review I have ever read. I’m thoroughly touched by your mum’s lovely words. Message to Mrs Barrera: Dear Mrs Barrera, I am thrilled to hear you enjoyed my book A Standard Journey – a few people have commented on the end. This book means so much to me for so many different reasons, the journey, those wonderful boys, my life, decisions and emotions – so to have someone such as yourself write such beautiful words – is simply wonderful. Thank you. xx
